Blueberry Picking Margaret River (Locals Guide 2024)

Blueberry picking Margaret River is a great way to enjoy the natural beauty and bounty of Western Australia. Located on the southwest coast, this area is renowned for its stunning scenery, abundant wildlife, and an abundance of fresh blueberries waiting to be picked.

Whether you are a seasoned blueberry picker or just looking for an enjoyable outdoor activity, Margaret River offers the perfect environment to enjoy blueberry picking. With its sunny climate and rich soil, this region is ideal for growing large and delicious blueberries – ripe and ready to be taken home for use in all kinds of recipes!

I am a Margaret River local and I have been blueberry picking at least 5 times now with the kids, and I think I’ve bought home about 40kg of blueberries or so in total, which I have frozen for the kids to eat later, so I am the perfect person to tell you everything you need to know to do blueberry picking in Margaret River yourself!

Are you ready to find out?

My friend and our kids heading down to do some blueberry picking!

Where Can I Go Blueberry Picking Margaret River?

There is one farm you can go blueberry picking at in Margaret River. It is called Lorien Blue and is located at a gorgeous property in Forest Grove, about 15 minutes south of Margaret River. To get the address, send them a message on their Facebook page.

When Can I Go Blueberry Picking?

The pick-your-own season starts mid to late December and lasts until late February depending on the crop. Contact them if it is at the very start or very end to find out if they’re available or check their Facebook page for updates.

When Is The Blueberry Farm Open?

You can go pick your own blueberries at Lorien Blue 7 days a week between 7 am and 7 pm, from mid to late December, until late February.

How Much Do The Blueberries Cost To Pick?

Picking is free of charge, you simply pay for the berries that you take home. $25 per kilo or part thereof is all it costs. Calculators are conveniently located in the shed should you need to calculate your bill!

How Do I Pay For My Blueberries?

Lorien Blue operates on an honor system. After your picking, take a moment to weigh the berries and document the total amount on the record sheet in the Pickers Shed. Payment is accepted either through CASH or bank transfer, with bank details available in the shed. Unfortunately, they do not accept EFTPOS at this location.

Kids are hard at work here.

What Do I Need To Bring To Pick Blueberries?

Don’t forget your hat, sunscreen, and closed-toe shoes for the blueberry picking. And don’t forget to bring a bottle (or two) of water! Lorien Blue provides bags for you to take your harvested berries home in; however, we always encourage bringing along reusable containers when possible as part of our efforts toward reducing single-use plastic consumption.

I definitely recommend taking containers along to store your blueberries until you get home, as the first time we used plastic bags and the blueberries ended up kind of squished by the time we got home (have kids they said….)

Then at home, I transfer the blueberries into snaplock bags and straight into the freezer!

Can I Take My Dog Blueberry Picking?

Unfortunately, this is an active farm and they cannot accommodate dogs.

Can My Children Come Blueberry Picking With Me?

Absolutely! This is an amazing activity that can be enjoyed by all. Children are the best pickers (and eaters) and it’s always so delightful to teach them about berries! Their small fingers make berry picking easier and more efficient. However, it’s important for adults to keep a close eye on their children at all times as there may be waterholes or other farm hazards present on the premises.

Are The Blueberries Organic?

Unfortunately, the berries are not organic. While no chemicals were sprayed directly on the plants, some chemicals have been used in other areas of the farm.

Blueberry picking in Margaret River is such a fun way to spend an afternoon and the kids just love it so much!

Australia Travel Planning Guide

đźš‘Should I buy Australian travel insurance?

100% YES! â€” Australia has “free” healthcare but it’s only for citizens and permanent residents. Foreigners visiting need travel insurance in case anything happens on their visit. I like SafetyWing â€“ their Nomad Insurance starts at just $1.50 USD a day!

đźš—Should I rent a car in Australia?

Yes — Renting a car is a necessity in most of Australia! If you want to go on road trips or adventures outside of the major cities, and even if you’re staying in a major city, you’ll want to rent a car. If you are visiting Margaret River, it will be even more important that you hire a car, you’ll need it to be able to get around and see all the great attractions and wineries!

🏨What’s the best way to book my Australian accommodation?

My go-to for Australian hotels is Booking.com. Pretty much all registered accommodation use Booking.com (but not necessarily any of the other major booking platforms), and even most of the holiday homes and caravan parks use Booking.com too!

If you’re planning a trip to Australia where you will stay at multiple locations, it’s super handy to have all your accommodation listed in one place, and accommodation owners like Booking.com because it’s easy to contact the guests using the messaging platform if the guest has an international phone number.

I sincerely hope you enjoy your visit to Margaret River!
