6 Best Day Trips From Margaret River!

Augusta
Augusta is a peaceful coastal town located at the southern tip of the Cape-to-Cape region. Augusta is only about half an hour’s drive south of Margaret River and you can head straight down the highway or take the scenic route through the beautiful towering Karri trees of Boranup Forrest.
You might know Augusta for the historic Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse which you can climb year round (weather permitting) and look out over the rugged coastline. This is where the Southern Ocean and Indian Ocean meet. The Lighthouse is seven stories high so it’s not for the faint hearted and if you’re easily spooked, be warned.. there’s a tale or two of the haunted Lighthouse residents. If you get to the top and keep your eyes peeled, from June to September you might even be fortunate enough to spot the beautiful Southern Right Whales on their journey north.
After your lighthouse climb you might need a little cool off in the ocean. The coastline around Augusta is stunning and relatively secluded so you might even get the beach to yourself. One of our favourite beaches near Augusta is Cosy Corner. Cosy Corner is great for swimming, snorkeling and diving. It is accessible by 2WD and quite often you’ll find you have it to yourself.
If you’d prefer to stay in the town of Augusta, Flinders Bay is perfect for a quick dip. The bay is picturesque and sheltered with silky white sand and rocky outcrops as well as two small jetties making it another perfect spot for kids to swim safely, or for snorkeling.
There is a picnic area here so why not grab some take away fish and chips for lunch from Augusta Fish and Chips and enjoy this scenic spot and an epic feed.
If a restaurant is more your vibe… The Colourpatch has an amazing menu comprised of plates featuring fresh local produce done well. The beer, wine and cocktail list is also pretty impressive so be sure to save room for a cheeky tipple.
There’s really no need to rush back to Margaret River, so to round out your perfect day trip out we suggest stopping in at Whirlwind Olives on your way home. A little unassuming cottage packed full of award winning olive oils, olives, condiments and accessories. They also offer farm tours and tastings if you’re not in a hurry.
Black Point, D’Entrecastreaux National Park
A couple of hours from Margaret River, depending on the track, is Black Point. Black Point is a rocky headland and is quite a unique spot on the WA coastline as it is a basalt outcrop, black in colour giving off some serious volcanic vibes.
This particular outcrop of igneous rock is specifically referred to as Bunbury Basalt. Even though Black Point is a few hours from Bunbury it was at one point connected, we are talking prehistoric times here! Before it eventually broke apart and gradually ‘drifted’ away.
Popular with surfers, campers and fisherman, Black Point is 4WD only and can sometimes be quite the bumpy adventure in. However, you will be rewarded for your efforts with some of the most stunning coastal scenery on the south coast.
Black point can be rugged and secluded so ensure you are prepared with more than enough food and water supplies as well as recovery gear. The track is sometimes closed in winter so be sure to check prior to your trip.

Yeagerup Dunes, Pemberton
A couple of hours from Margaret River is the adventure packed playground of Yeagerup Dunes. About 20km south west of Pemberton the dunes are a large land-locked dune system that seemingly rise up out of the magnificent Karri forrest.
The best way to explore this coastal wonderland is by 4WD. Test your abilities in the soft sand over some very steep slopes if you dare. Almost desert like with vast expanses of sandy vistas to one side, and glimpses of forrest and sea to the other, this is quite a magical place.
If you are 4WDing in the dunes be sure you have adequate supplies, especially water. Have your recovery gear or even better a second vehicle with you.
If you don’t have a 4WD but do have a willingness to walk through the sand you can still access the dunes. There is a carpark at Yeagerup Lake with basic toilets and picnic facilities. From here you can park up and walk however we recommend you take water, have a reasonable level of fitness and be aware of approaching vehicles.

Nannup
Nannup is a quaint little village about 45 minutes from Margaret River. Visiting Nannup is like stepping back in time with it’s one main street, historical buildings and thriving cottage gardens bursting with colour. Nannup is situated on the banks of the majestic Blackwood River and offers day trippers a peaceful day out in town or the option for adventure if your heart so desires.
Nannup has a thriving arts and music scene as well as an abundance of local produce available. A leisurely stroll through town will have you meandering through art galleries, tea rooms and gift stores packed with wares by local artisans and makers.
If you’ve got time to enjoy a beer at the local pub, chances are you’ll be treated to some live music in the beer garden. Nannup is home to the Nannup Music Festival as well as the Nannup Flower and Garden Festival. To learn more about these events and others near Margaret River check out here.
Mountain biking is also a huge drawcard with mountain bikers across the world. With newly developed trails and a thriving local scene, if your idea of a day trip is more adventure based, why not head to Nannup to hit the trails?
With trails currently covering approximately 40km from town all the way to Barrabup and Workers Pools and a new Trail Town project underway there will be options for all bikers to explore the area. Black Diamond Lake, Collie
Black Diamond Lake has recently started to enjoy some Instagram fame, fast becoming a hotspot for day trippers from the Margaret River Region. Black Diamond is an easy drive from Margaret River of under two hours and is popular with families for a fun day out as well as snap happy budding influencers.
Black Diamond Lake, along with several others in the Collie area, are decommissioned mines with a limestone base, and surrounded by limestone banks which is why the water is so blue. It’s truly a sight to behold. It is seriously, the bluest of blue water.
The water is regularly tested and is generally declared safe for swimming. The chalky consistency means the depth isn’t clear, so be careful if diving. We recommend taking your floats.. thinking unicorn, swan, floating hammock.. I mean why not? You can even kayak or SUP here. Of course, don’t forget your camera to capture the fun.
There is no camping at Black Diamond and limited facilities for such a popular spot so be sure to leave no trace and take all your rubbish and belongings with you. Arrive early to get the best park on the banks and set up for the day.

Busselton
Only about 30 mins north of Margaret River, Busselton still takes out a top spot for day tripping as there is just SO much to do. Busselton is a thriving coastal town known for the iconic 1.8km Busselton Jetty and foreshore precinct and that is exactly why we recommend you spend a day here.
The perfect day in Busselton starts with a train ride out on the Jetty. The Stocker Preston Express Train is an electric train powered by solar and features an audio play of the history of the jetty. Kids love it as you’ll pass by fisherman, walkers and brave kids jetty-jumping into the deeper water.
Towards the end of the Jetty you’ll have the opportunity to exit the train and enter the underwater observatory. This is the perfect way to view the abundant sea life underneath the surface. With multiple large viewing windows you can gaze in awe at the colourful corals, friendly little fish, larger species, stingrays and sometimes even mermaids!
After enjoying your time in the observatory you can either return on the train or take a leisurely stroll back towards the foreshore. There are many options for light snacks, coffee, cake etc. or for something more substantial walk over to Shelter Brewing Co for a pub-style feed.
If the kids need to burn off some energy after a snack or lunch, the foreshore playground is just so cool! Featuring a giant squid, a whale water park and a nature play shipwreck, this adventure playground will keep them busy for hours. There is something for all ages here from a sensory toddler play space to climbing the crows nest for the bigger, braver kids.
